Chapter 9

Assuming others don’t get design

Abstract

We sometimes tell ourselves a story where we are the lone design hero standing between the user and the stakeholders. In today’s collaborative and cross-functional teams, it’s important to realize the potential of working with nondesigners to strengthen our ideas and output with their perspectives, and also harness the “not invented here” bias to sell our ideas. We need to develop empathy for colleagues and stakeholders who are not accustomed to working with high levels of uncertainty.
