Writing a foreword to an anthology is often a bittersweet thing for scholars. On the one hand, it is a great honor to be invited to introduce a collection of some of the field’s most innovative work. Such invitations usually suggest that the writers are sufficiently long in the tooth to assess the quality of the essays within, as well as the volume’s place in (and importance to) the field generally. Additionally, the process of writing a foreword is typically far more fun than it is laborious; all the fabulous new ideas the book contains are a joy to read and reflect upon, and these in turn inspire thoughts of future convivialities and collegial exchanges.
