KEY EXCHANGE IN A NETWORK
A COMPLICATED mechanism using a hierarchy of keys was provided to exchange a shared key when users in a public data network wanted to encipher their communications using a symmetric-key cryptographic system. Diffie and Hellman invented public-key cryptography to provide a simpler method for key exchange in public data networks. Both methodologies are examined in this chapter.
