Beats is a platform for lightweight shippers that send data from edge machines to Logstash and Elasticsearch.
Beats is the platform for single-purpose data shippers. They install as lightweight agents and send data from hundreds or thousands of machines to Logstash or Elasticsearch.
Beats sits on the server and according to the type of data employs so-called shippers to collect data. The data collected by these shippers can be directly sent to Elasticsearch or can be passed to Logstash for appropriate transformation as needed and then sent to Elasticsearch (or in fact any output stores as detailed in a previous section).
