When hearing the word portfolio, most people think of an investment portfolio. In decision analysis, portfolio refers to a set of potential alternatives. It could be a collection of businesses, or a group of oil and gas fields, or a group of pharmaceutical compounds, or a collection of publicity or advertising alternatives.
Decision analysts spend considerable time and work helping clients with portfolio management, which can become quite complex in practice (especially in the pharmaceutical industry, where the company’s ultimate survival can depend on properly managing the pipeline of new potential drugs).
