Instructing writing with online writing labs—taking OWL as an example

ABSTRACT: Online writing labs, with encyclopedic self-access writing resources, can be valuable writing
instruction materials for tertiary EFL students in China today. The article takes Online Writing Lab (OWL)
at Purdue University as an example, illustrating that the lab can be employed to instruct students to write in
process approach and genre approach and can be used to enhance students’ writing skills. Moreover, OWL is
effective for teachers to prepare for writing courses.
