PREFACE

The oil price booms of the nineteen-seventies served as the catalysts to change within many progressive industrial scenarios. The maritime industry is one such scenario.

Over the last two decades significant technological development has resulted from increased knowledge, understanding, and application of the discipline of engineering electronics. As ships and their equipment have paralleled such developments, it has led to major revisions in on-board working practices. Communication practices between vessels and the shore are changing markedly as electronic communications technology and its associated reliability progressively replaces the dedicated communicator on board ship.
