INMARSAT Usage in the GMDSS

 

INMARSAT-A SHIP EARTH STATION

Distress Communications

BEFORE INITIATING DISTRESS PROCEDURE:-

a) Consider your geographical location and consider which Coast Earth Station is best situated to help;

b) If time permits, write down your DISTRESS message before transmission;

c) Be aware of User's Handbook instructions for your equipment, particularly with regard to DISTRESS calling; and

d) The Master's authority is required for DISTRESS, URGENCY, or SAFETY calls.

Remember that misuse of the DISTRESS facility may result in the de-commissioning of your SES.

Use of the Distress Facility

On INMARSAT-A or INMARSAT-B equipment the DISTRESS alert is usually activated by either:-

a) Pressing a prominent DISTRESS key; or
