What Is Identity Theft?

A basic definition of identity theft is that it is a crime where someone pretends to be another person for the purposes of committing crimes, usually fraud. It is important to note that we are not talking about a criminal who uses the identity of a made-up person, but instead uses a real persosn's. Strange as it may sound, the person whose identity has been stolen can be dead or alive. There are cases of criminals who have stolen the identities of functional members of society, the ones of children that have died early, or those of very old individuals.
