What Can Be Done?
While we know that not all hackers are the same, there certainly are some commonalities that we can take advantage of to improve our security. First of all, hackers do things for a reason. The four elemental hacking motivations are revenge, profit, pride, and curiosity. They really determine how much damage a high-tech criminal is intent on causing. For example, those looking for revenge are usually interested in inflicting the greatest harm, while those looking to satisfy their curiosity want to inflict the least harm.
Hackers can, of course, be motivated by multiple motivations, not just a single motivation. These motivations are usually additive, meaning that someone can be motivated by pride and curiosity at the same time. ...
