What Else Can Be Done?
Identity theft is growing rapidly and will continue to do so until we take steps to slow it down. The current trend is to make it a more severe crime with harsher punishment. That will not be nearly enough, since criminals usually don't believe they will get caught. Counter-intuitively, a more severe punishment might actually drive more of these crimes, because identity thieves will exert more effort to hide from the law while committing their crimes. Here are some recommendations that we as a society should investigate and implement to cut the growth of identity theft and its secondary crimes.
