Thanks to Windows and the Macintosh, when we think of user interfaces today it's almost always in terms of a window-based, graphical user interface (GUI). The APIs used within Java to create such GUIs are part of the J2SE package, and thus not within the scope of this book. A few good reference books on developing GUIs in Java are listed at the end of this chapter; here we'll just cover some of the basics without getting into the details.
