I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Idea 45: The worst-case scenario
What practice in planning and the resultant experience teach is that once you start implementing them, the plans rarely work out the way you predict they will. There are usually surprises – sometimes unpleasant ones. Therefore it is vital to stay flexible, which means being able to modify or change your plans as unforeseen circumstances unfold.
Master planners always like to imagine the worst-case scenario. Here is Napoleon at work, in a letter to his brother Joseph:
I am used to thinking three or four months in advance about what I must do, and I calculate on the worst. In war nothing is achieved except by calculations. Everything that is not soundly planned in its details yields no results.
