Deploying and Using PowerPivot
in SharePoint
In Lesson 33 you learned how PowerPivot can load massive amounts of data into Excel and
then users can create reports that process all within a system’s memory. This new technology
may change how we think about Business Intelligence projects. PowerPivot gives end users
much of the same functionality that Analysis Services gives them in Excel, with the addition
of slicers, which were discussed in Lesson 33. For large enterprise data warehouse projects, it
makes sense to go through the process of designing an Analysis Services cube, but for small
departmental projects, PowerPivot fits perfectly.
Adding PowerPivot reports to SharePoint can be a lengthy process, but the payoff can be
impressive to end users. For example, SharePoint 2010 has new web parts for PowerPivot that
can be used to display PowerPivot documents. Figure 39-1 shows the PowerPivot Gallery and
the carousel effect it has, which gives you a way to preview each document before opening it.
In this lesson you will walk through the steps needed to configure SharePoint and PowerPivot
to work together, before creating a PowerPivot Gallery for your users.
The process for installing and configuring the PowerPivot integration with SharePoint begins
with the installation of both SQL Server 2008 R2 and SharePoint 2010. When installing, you
