Using Maps in Your Report
Reports using tables and matrixes are good for presenting data to your users in a simple lay-
out, but these are not always the best means of displaying data. If your company has stores in
many different cities and states, it may be a better idea to show data on a map. The new map
control in SQL Server R2 allows you to use the geospatial data type in SQL Server to show
data on a map. This can be a map of the United States or a map of just a single state. As of the
writing of this book, the United States is the only country available in this map feature.
In the AdventureWorks2008R2 sample database there is geospatial data in the Address.Person
table. The following query will show the spatial data and can be seen in Figure 26-1 as it looks
when run in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
Select AddressLine1, City, SpatialLocation
from Person.Address
FIGURE 261
The Spatial Data column is not readable when queried from SQL Server Management Studio.
Reporting Services can interpret this information as location information and show it on a map.
