Relationship Types
In the last section you saw how the Dimension Usage tab shows the relationships among the various
dimensions and measure groups. You saw in Figure 16-7 that the Reseller dimension doesn’t relate
to Internet Sales. You also saw how the dimensions were automatically related to the new measure
group when you created the Reseller Sales measure group. What if the automated logic makes a mis-
take or the Reseller dimension really has a relationship to the Internet Sales measure group?
As you saw in Figure 16-7, dimensions that don’t relate to the measure group are denoted by a gray
box. To create the relationship or change an existing relationship, click the ellipsis button in the gray
box or where a relationship already exists. This opens the Define Relationship dialog box, where
you can create relationships between measure groups and dimensions. The most simplistic relation-
ship is a one-to-many relationship; in SSAS this is called a regular relationship and you can set it
in the “Select relationship type” drop-down box shown in Figure 16-8. After you select this option,
you pick the primary key for your “Granularity attribute” drop-down box and pick the column in
the fact table that links the tables together. Don’t actually save this example as this is an incorrect
relationship.
