Understanding SSIS
If you’re new to SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), it can be a very intimidating and over-
whelming tool. It consists of a myriad of diverse components, each of which can perform a
multitude of operations. SSIS is a tool that can be used to construct high-performance work-
flow processes, which include, but are not limited to, the extraction, transformation, and load-
ing of a data warehouse (ETL). It encompasses most of the tools required to migrate data from
various data sources, including flat files, Excel workbooks, databases (SQL, Oracle, MySQL,
DB2), and many other sources. Coupling SSIS with the SQL Server Agent you have the ability
to construct an entire ETL framework that can fully or incrementally load your warehouse on
a time-based interval that meets your organization’s needs. In this section we demystify some
of the key components of SSIS. We focus primarily on those that are essential in the develop-
ment of most SSIS packages.
BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE DEVELOPMENT STUDIO BIDS
BIDS is the Graphical User Interface (GUI) that you will use to develop, debug, and maybe
deploy SSIS packages, which are the building blocks of SSIS. This tool allows you to develop
packages that can:
Execute SQL Tasks
Extract data from various sources
Load data into various sources
Perform data cleansing
Lookup, Merge, and Aggregate data
Note that this is not an exhaustive ...
