LESSON 31 RepoRting against a Cube with exCel
Step-by-Step
1. Starting with a clean worksheet in Excel, make a data connection to the AdventureWorks2008
cube. We did this earlier in the process, illustrated by Figures 31-1 through 31-4. Make sure to
choose only PivotTable Report. You will add the chart after your analysis is set up.
2. Once you are connected, you should see a PivotTable Field List like the one in Figure 31-8.

3. Now add the important measures and dimensions for your analysis. Drag Reseller Sales
Amount to the Values area, Product Categories to the Column Labels area, and Date.Calendar
and Reseller Type to the Row Labels area. Then explore your pivot table. Your matrix should
look like the one in Figure 31-9.
4. Now that you have the right information in the pivot table, let’s apply a great Excel feature
called conditional formatting. Highlight the cells with numbers in them and select the type
of conditional formatting you wish. You’re going to use Data Bars Solid Fill, as shown in
Figure 31-10.
