1. It’s difficult to differentiate money spent on recognition from that spent on incentives. Harold Stolovich, Richard Clark, and Steven Condly, authors of “Incentive, Motivation and Workplace Performance: Research and Best Practices” (available through the Professional Society for Performance Improvement), estimate $117 billion is spent on incentives, including variable pay.
