Humanism
There is a vast literature on humanism and many defini-
tions of the term. Moreover, some scholars have argued that
the term has had so many meanings that it is “indefinable.”
1
Hence, this book uses the term in a specific way and it draws
on two perspectives. One consists of survey articles by schol-
ars with deep expertise on humanism. The other, inevitably,
is the viewpoint of the author. This has been shaped, in part,
by many years of reading and teaching about Machiavelli; a
long-standing interest in Michel de Montaigne, his essays,
and the many interpretations of them; and the ideas and
intellectual viewpoint of the great contemporary humanist
and historian of ideas, Isaiah Berlin.
