The Internet of Things is the network of interconnected devices capable of collecting and exchanging data. As of 2023, there were 15.14 billion IoT devices worldwide and this figure is expected to reach 29.42 billion by 2030 (Statista, 2024).

This expansive web of devices, including sensors, smartphones, wearables and smart home appliances, extends internet connectivity beyond the obvious, giving everyday objects advanced functionality. These devices communicate with each other and with centralized systems, which enables them to send and receive data autonomously.
