The CAS role
Microsoft introduced the CAS server role in Exchange 2007 to begin the process of moving the responsibility for client connections away from the Store. This was part of the effort to decompose Exchange into a set of server roles that can be individually deployed and managed. The CAS is designed to handle three different kinds of traffic:
External connections from Internet clients: Traffic that flows into an organization generated by clients using different protocols, including Outlook Anywhere, Outlook Web App (OWA), Internet Message Access Protocol version 4 (IMAP4), Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), and ActiveSync clients, as well as clients that use Exchange Web Services (EWS), such as the latest version of Microsoft Entourage ...
