Foreign and delivery connectors
The vast majority of messaging communication from Exchange 2010 is conducted using SMTP. However, SMTP is not the only messaging protocol in use and Exchange needs to be able to communicate with systems that don’t use SMTP. The growing acceptance of SMTP as the de facto standard for email exchange, plus the addition of other Internet-driven standards such as iCal, permits much better out-of-the-box connectivity between email systems today and has eliminated the need to operate many bespoke gateways. When the need still exists, it is met through either a foreign or delivery connector.
