Chapter 8

Building Trust and Rapport

Overview

The trust factor is a major issue in a multicultural work environment. Managers born and raised in the U.S. often have trouble trusting employees from other cultures, and the reverse is true too.

A manager must work extra hard to make sure that members of a multicultural workforce trust him or her. As a manager, you also must be in control of the area of the workplace for which you’re responsible. It may seem risky, then, to hand over authority to someone from another culture—someone who may not yet trust you—but if you don’t give them a chance to do the best they can, showing that you trust them, they’ll never step up. You’ll lose out on their potential.
