Foreword
Today, most people agree that innovation is a major driving force behind eco-
nomic growth and general improvement in human well-being. Research shows
that in countries with social institutions that promote innovation, people not
only live longer, but also enjoy high standards of living [1]. Governments and
private companies pour money into research and development (R&D). In 2013,
US R&D spending is expected to reach $423.7 billion, with global R&D increas-
