Standards Relationships
The XML Standard depends on a number of other standards that are used as building blocks for the XML Recommendation. These supplementary standards include
SGML (ISO 8879:1986)— The SGML standard is defined by the International Standards Organization, and it is the basis for XML. XML is actually a limited subset of the SGML standard, and, therefore, changes in the SGML standard might influence changes in the XML Recommendation.
ISO/IEC 10646 and Unicode— These standards are used to define the character sets and encoding that are used to represent character data with XML documents.
IETF RFC 1738 and RFC 1808— These Requests for Comments from the Internet Engineering Task Force are the standards that define the syntax for Universal ...
