Standards Relationships

The XML Standard depends on a number of other standards that are used as building blocks for the XML Recommendation. These supplementary standards include

  • SGML (ISO 8879:1986)— The SGML standard is defined by the International Standards Organization, and it is the basis for XML. XML is actually a limited subset of the SGML standard, and, therefore, changes in the SGML standard might influence changes in the XML Recommendation.

  • ISO/IEC 10646 and Unicode— These standards are used to define the character sets and encoding that are used to represent character data with XML documents.
