In this chapter, we have looked at the X-Smiles browser as a tool to display SMIL presentations. This is only one of several available tools. The Real.com players also have significant SMIL playing capabilities. Other SMIL players are likely to be available by the time you read this.
Caution
Be aware, when using different SMIL players to test code, that RealPlayer leaves a task running in the background. This can cause problems for other applications attempting to access SMIL files or the files referenced by those SMIL files that you ran earlier using RealPlayer.
The tools to create a SMIL presentation can be as simple as an XML-aware text editor or can be expensive custom SMIL design tools like the GRiNS editor.
