This chapter brings you up to speed on creating valid XML in addition to well-formed XML, and introduces some of the concepts associated with XML and validation as well. Many of the terms and concepts in this chapter also apply to working with other types of valid XML—using XML Schemas, for example—to create valid XML documents.

In Chapter 5, we will move on to discussing XML Schemas as a mechanism for validation. There are also a number of alternative schemas, and we will touch briefly on the two most popular: RELAX NG and Schematron.
