To plan and implement strategy, you must first determine if you are in more than one business. Defining business segments is a cornerstone of the strategic management process. A company must develop, nurture, and implement basic strategies for each business in which it engages.
If your organization is a holding company with numerous business units, it is obvious that it has multiple businesses. A business unit or division is typically a semiautonomous or autonomous organization consisting of at least one independent business and possibly more.
