When I was a consultant, I worked with for client who was implementing a shipping management system. The project had a lot of very good things happening. There was a very engaged and lively customer group. The sponsor was the CEO of the company and was actively engaged in the project. The project manager was very seasoned and had lots of experience implementing systems. There was only one little problem: they were implementing the system using a beta version of some of the key technology components that the entire system was reliant upon. This one little problem was enough to create a massive cost overrun, significantly delay implementation of the product, and burn out an entire team.
