The whole productivity app situation — Mail, Calendar, and People — has gone through enormous changes since the days of Windows 7. In the good old days, Mail, Calendar, and People were basically just one app — similar to the current situation in Office, where Outlook covers all the bases. That single app, confusingly, was called Windows Live Mail, even though it handled mail and contacts and calendar. It worked reasonably well, but it was old and clunky and didn’t have many features.

In Windows 8, Microsoft created three separate apps: Mail, Calendar, and People. All three were connected, but each worked independently. Things improved with Windows 10, and a bit with Windows 11 too. We now have two apps: Mail and Calendar (which are just one app with two working modes), and People. In this chapter, I cover the Mail and Calendar side of things. The People app is covered in the next chapter of this minibook. ...
