Chapter 1
Backing Up Data
IN THIS CHAPTER
Discovering what happened to older backup options
Backing up and restoring your data with File History
Storing your data in the cloud
If you’re accustomed to using earlier versions of Windows to back up or restore data, to ghost (clone) an entire drive, or to set restore points, you’re probably in this chapter looking for something that no longer exists. Microsoft is deprecating (killing, zapping) all the old backup and restore functions, in favor of new (and easier-to-use) options.
In Windows 11, the main tools promoted by Microsoft for this task are OneDrive (which stores everything in Microsoft’s cloud) and File History (which stores everything on a storage drive you own).
In this chapter, I talk mostly about File History and how to set it up so that it makes backups of your data on an external drive or a network drive. The tool works well, is easy to use, and pretty reliable. I also discuss the benefits of storing your data in the cloud, and the privacy concerns you may have. As you’ll see for yourself, online backups make your life easier!
