Teams are often not aware of their unstated assumptions. When these assumptions are exposed, this drives the team to discuss and clarify the business value, the scope, and the impact of any given user story. Unless exposed during the story writing sessions, these unstated (and often differing) assumptions among the team are not discovered until the development, test, and product documentation work is well underway when implementing a story.
