Computer-aided translation (CAT), like many terms in the translation industry, means different things to different people. For the purposes of this book, CAT refers to any of the following applications:
Computer-based bilingual and multilingual dictionaries
Terminology management software
Translation memory (TM) software
Machine translation (MT) software
The first three types of tools are designed to assist translators. The fourth tool, machine translation, may be used to replace translators altogether. Tools are not without their tradeoffs.
