2.11 MPEG-2
2.11.1 Introduction
Whilst many other methods exist, MPEG-2 is today the de facto standard method for carrying compressed audio and video signals. The standard provides a highly flexible set of techniques that enable a wide variety of bit rates and programme structures to be carried under a single standard technique.
At its simplest an MPEG-2 signal may carry just a single audio or video component; at its most complex it may carry several complete television services, each comprising audio, video, data and text components.
