There are many different videotape formats. Some have been more successful than others. Some have been technically more superior than others. There is often very little correlation between commercial success and quality or technical excellence.

The videotape recorder has been in existence for about 50 years. The only way to record video before videotape recorders was to use film. Film did not lend itself well to television. It required a telecine to convert the film to a television signal.
