Computer creativity has been slipping onto our screens and edging into our con-

sciousness for 40 years. Recently, however, a new approach has been added to the

computer creator's armory: evolution. Programs using evolutionary algorithms

can evolve unexpected structures, if necessary over many thousands of genera-

tions, of a form that the human mind could not have produced by itself. As this

volume shows, these structures may lie in the visual, graphic, or musical arts, or
