In-place upgrade installs a new operating system for the user, keeping all his data and applications. Deploying an operating system using this scenario is quite sophisticated, as the administrator needs to take care not only of securing user data from being removed, but also installing all the missing applications on the new operating system.
It is always good to perform a backup copy of an operating system from a computer that will be processed, but this might significantly extend the time needed for deployment on a single computer. Deployment of that type is done by the ConfigMgr client, so there is no need to import any data to the ConfigMgr database.
