Windows image files allow for saving data in operating system image files. One .wim file can contain one instance of a regular or Windows PE operating system.
The .wim files contain the structure of saved files and folders from the template machine. To reduce used space, all operating system files are saved in a .wim file only once, so even if one file appears twice in the system, the .wim file will contain only one copy of the actual file.
During installation, files are installed where they are supposed to be on the template machine. Thanks to this deduplication process, the .wim files are much smaller than the actual operating system.
