13章ツール: 誤解と問題解決
本章では、ツールの選択と利用に関するさまざまなシナリオで発生する誤解や問題解決の方法を扱う。特定のツールや技術の問題解決は本書が取り扱うテーマからは大きくかけ離れているので取り上げない。ここで取り上げるのは、意思決定プロセスやツール整備をめぐるさまざまなワークフローの問題である。
13.1 ツールの誤解
devops関連のツール整備に関する誤解は、突き詰めれば、devopsソリューションにおける特定のツールの重要性に関するものが多い。
13.1.1 技術Xから、他社にあわせて技術Yに移行しなければいけない
第Ⅰ部でも触れたように、devopsは文化運動だ。文化には技術スタックが含まれており、それを全体的に変更すると（特に、経営陣からの命令によって）、組織全体の足を引っ張るようなコストがかかる。特定のツールを廃止する前に、既存の文化の一部だった環境内でのツールの意味を認めよう。そして、それぞれの人がツールを使って得てきた経験を理解し、他者の経験とどのような類似点や相違点があるかを考えるのだ。どのような変更が必要とされているか、それはすぐに必要なのかを明らかにするには、このような検討と評価が欠かせない。
例外はアップグレードだ。技術においてアップグレードは必須である。アップグレードをいつまでもためらっていると、信頼性とテストという点で余分に技術的負債を抱えてしまう。アップグレードが早すぎると、その製品の品質保証テストをするようなことになる。アップグレードが遅すぎると、消えかかっている技術の境界条件を探すようなことになってしまう。
