ストーリーは、話す人にとっても聞く人にとっても、学習の大きな部分である。学習とは、単に新しいツールや新しいプログラミング言語の使い方、何らかの技術的スキルの伸ばし方を学ぶことだけだと思われているかもしれないが、そうではない。それらさまざまなツールや技術を、なぜどのようにして使うかというコンテキストも、技術的な詳細以上とは言わないまでも、同じくらいの影響を持つ。
幸い、特定の環境のなかでツールを使うときの文化的なコンテキストを共有するのに、ストーリーという優れた方法がある。たとえば、NetflixのChaos Monkey（http://bit.ly/netflix-chaos-mnky）は、仮想マシンを無作為にクラッシュさせて本番環境のエラーを明示的にテストする。NetflixでChaos Monkeyをどのように使っているかに関するストーリーは、Netflixの次のような価値観を具体的に示す。
- 午前2時ではなく日中の、エンジニアがベストを尽くせるときにエラーを解決すること
- エラーを起こして止まるのではなく、サービスが縮退して動き続けるソフトウェアを書くこと
- ソフトウェアを運用するときのモードのひとつとしてエラーを想定すること
本章では、チームや組織の価値観を暗黙のうちに、あるいは明示的に示す文化的なコンテキストのさまざまな側面を取り上げていく。次に、あなた自身の環境でこういった学習を強化していく方法を取り上げ、チーム間さらには組織間での学習を後押しする方法を見ていく。
