The Scoping Phase of the Iterative SDPM Strategy for the Rational Unified Process Model

Figure 18-3 illustrates the project management Scoping Phase integrated with the Business Modeling and Requirements Gathering Phases of the Iterative SDPM strategy of the RUP model. The RUP model is essentially an Incremental type approach where each increment includes a complete Standard Waterfall model, but that is where the similarity ends. The purpose, content, and characteristics of each increment are what establish RUP as an Iterative rather than an Incremental approach.

The Scoping Phase is embedded in the RUP Inception and consists of the following tasks:

• Establishing a business model

• Describing the core requirements through a function and feature list

• Gathering a documented list of all use cases that flow from the functions and features list

• Crafting a high-level outline of the phases and iterations

The following is a description of each task that makes up the Inception Phase.

Establishing a Business Model
