You may have noted that we put the user interface for this—the icons and the screens—a little far out; so far, we've put everything at least five meters out. Why is that?
It's because of accommodation-vergence conflict.
When your eyes 'point' at something, like we discussed in Chapter 1, What is Virtual Reality, Really?, and if that something is really close to your face, your eyes will attempt to focus on it. However, your HMD is a fixed focus device, and always shows things in focus, no matter how close or far away they are. In the real world, something that is, say, closer than 3 to 4 feet will require your eyes to focus more than something say 10 feet away.
