With PC VR, such as the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, controllers give a very important ability to interact with the VR world. These controllers are tracked in 3D space so that the software knows where they are. Developers can code these to look like hands, guns, and so on. This allows you to reach out and touch the world around you--very important to make the Virtual Reality you are interacting with actually something you can interact with.
