In World War II, the Marines tested amphibious landings extensively before the War in the Pacific. They had tactics and strategy down.

The first landing they did, they hit coral reefs. There are no coral reefs in San Diego/Camp Pendleton. As a result, although it was a successful landing, it was a bit more calamitous than they thought it would be. As a result, the Marine Corps has a saying:

"Train as you would fight."

This has apparently been a long–standing saying. The Roman Legion used to say:

"Training should be a bloodless battle, so that in battle, it will be just like bloody training."
