Dependency Inversion Principle

There is a way to improve on the traditional Layers Architecture by adjusting the way dependencies work. The Dependency Inversion Principle (DIP) was postulated by Robert C. Martin and described in [Martin, DIP]. The formal definition states:

High-level modules should not depend on low-level modules. Both should depend on abstractions.

Abstractions should not depend upon details. Details should depend upon abstractions.

The essence of this definition is communicating that a component that provides low-level services (Infrastructure, for this discussion) should depend on interfaces defined by high-level components (for this discussion, User Interface, Application, and Domain).
