The Thread Group was originally formed by Alphabet (Google holding company), Samsung, ARM, Qualcomm, NXP, and six others. Thread is a PAN protocol based on 6LoWPAN, which is based on 802.15.4. The working group licenses Thread using the public domain BSD license model. The intent of the group was to directly counter the Zigbee protocol, especially around the use of PAN mesh networks.
