In the thirty years since the first edition of this book was published the business environment has changed dramatically. Whereas once there was a degree of stability, now there is turbulence. Instead of being able to plan ahead, organisations today must be able to respond to events as they happen. Such a seismic change to the backdrop to economic activity requires new ways of working for every organisation, particularly in the way in which they manage the supply/demand network of which they are a part.
