Waste in the supply chain
Whilst we have previously discussed the growing demand for scarce resources and the potential impact on supply chain strategy, there are signs that industry is starting to adopt measures to mitigate those effects. Specifically, there is a growing realisation that there is a significant amount of ‘waste’ in almost every supply chain.
Waste comes in many forms; it could be in the form of inefficient use of energy, excessive packaging, resources that are not fully utilised, end-of-life scrappage – the list is endless. All of these wastes result in ‘value leakage’, i.e. a potential financial drain as well as negatively impacting the ‘triple bottom line’.
