These three projects are pivotal in genomics. The HGP focused on the DNA
sequence from a single individual, the HapMap project focused on variation in
the genome and on human populations, and the Cancer Genome Atlas Project is
concerned with how cancer affects the genomes. As a result of these seminal proj-
ects, and a unique culture of data sharing unknown to date among biologic re-
